Nursing Duties
This morning I am figuring out how to manage a new wound that has opened up on Mom's right ear.
It appears to be a pressure sore due to Mom spending so much time in bed lately, sleeping on her side.
The fact that I have had no training to manage pressure sores is an indicator that there is no formal acknowledgement of the work I am doing. If Mom was in an institution, there would be a trained nurse taking care of this wound.
Why is it ok to have Mom home with me, but it is not considered necessary to train me to manage this kind of predictable condition?
Why, if she is in an institution, it is required that she be attended by trained staff who are paid for the training they have received and paid for the work they are doing? Why, because she is at home, am I left to attend to this wound management without any training?
Why am I not provided training as a matter of routine, knowing that I am taking care of an elder with a high risk for developing pressure injuries?
When I informed Mom's GP that we were planning to bring Mom home, why wasn't I automatically enrolled in a Caregiving Introduction course - that would put me in a cohort of future family caregivers so we could go through the training together and then be available to support each other as we embarked on our caregiving journey? Why are family caregivers identified at the time of diagnosis - at least the early frontrunner for caregiving duties, so the family can begin to train and learn to support their caregivers as frontline staffing to manage the progression of the disease?
As the disease progresses and other health issues come into the picture, why isn't there a second training for caregivers that prepare them, and their families for this next stage?
Why are caregivers left on their own to burn out and then, inevitable, put their loved one in an institution with many more issues and problems than if the caregiver, and their family, had been properly trained from the beginning?
Why aren't we predicting the needs of caregivers and mitigating risk for them by providing adequate supports and training from the outset?
